VERA by Maja Johansson Starander is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Swedish Röllakan rug. Drawing on her Scandinavian upbringing and a rich heritage of art, textiles, and craft, Johansson Starander creates work that balances Nordic restraint with a broader, global sensibility.
Inspired by the interplay of light and shadow through a window, VERA began as a series of watercolour studies exploring lines, forms, stillness, and movement. These impressions were translated into a refined woven composition in shades of green, turquoise, grey, brown, and vanilla, allowing the subtle variations of yarn and hand weaving to become part of the design itself.
Handwoven by Vandra Rugs using traditional Swedish techniques and the finest natural materials, VERA brings together time-honoured craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression. The rug is finished with woven endings, lending a considered finish to its quietly dynamic character.
