India Mahdavi, 1999
Rattan
Ø40 X H60 CM

Born in 1999, The Bishop is India’s signature piece. It was originally designed as a bar stool for New York’s most private and enigmatic night club: Apt. Throughout the years, The Bishop has evolved and has now entered the collection of Paris’ Musee des Arts decoratifs.

The Bishop stool is to furniture what the bishop is to chess: it favours a diagonal movement over a straight one. Available in 20 colours, it can serve both as a stool and a side table. To complement it and expand its function, India has designed accessories: the peanut, a walnut tray that nestles the shape of two bishops to make them one, the C.O.D (direct object compliment): an enamelled ceramic tray that fits on top, transforming it to a side table, and the cocktail: a larger enamelled ceramic tray that translates the bishop into a cocktail table.

The Bishop boosts a space with a sculptured profile. As a bedside table, as a stool, in a living room or in a bedroom, the bishop’s defining feature is its versatility – it can sit anywhere as colourful domestic emblem, yet always defending its queen.
